Bio

Ralph Borland is an artist, curator, designer and researcher. He studied fine art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, majoring in sculpture. He pursued his Masters degree at New York University in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), focusing on interactive electronic art. His thesis artwork, ‘Suited for Subversion’ (2002) is in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. His PhD from Trinity College Dublin is a critical analysis of design for the developing world that draws on approaches from interventionist art and social activism. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the African Centre for Cities at UCT, conducting research on urban public culture, activism and design. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at UCT on the international research project ‘Global Arenas’, which investigates the global South’s contribution to theory and knowledge. His artwork has been exhibited a t the V Salon Digitale, Cuba in 2003 (ralphborland.net/front), Pelo ISEA no mar Báltico em 2004, e em Nova York (2007), Dublin (2008) e Belfast (2009). Sua arte tem representado África do Sul no Festival Cultural Jogos da Commonwealth na Austrália, em 2006 (ralphborland.net/sideshow), E os Jogos Olímpicos de Inverno em Vancouver em 2010 (ralphborland.net/sos). Suas esculturas públicas sobre Jetty Square em Cape Town foram instalados em 2006.
