In part two of this podcast, Vivek Shanbhag, a writer based in Bangalore, discusses the differences in writing short stories and novels. Novels require a bigger stamina with the advantage of denser detailing of characters and situations. However, short stories can be compared to a tight rope walk, where one wrong move can throw the whole story off balance. Jayant and Vivek discuss the comparison between abstract, literary and corporate oriented worlds. Vivek says these two worlds complement each other and that the corporate world is a mere recreation of the same world of people that we read or write about, but with real life metaphors. An experience in theatre and writing dramas helped Vivek understand the balance between dialogue and description in his stories. Vivek is the chief editor for Desha Kaala, a curated Kannada literary quarterly, dedicated to encouraging intra-cultural dialogue with a variety of content addressing fiction, social issues and expressions in multilingual contexts. This experience gave Vivek an extensive exposure to thought processes in multiple languages. Vivek, as an avid reader and writer has always been excited to read first manuscripts from writers of different languages. Its the excitement of entering a new world and allowing yourself to be immersed in someone else’s built world of experience. This entire podcast is spoken in Konkani and English. Konkani is a spoken language usually written in Devanagri script or Brahmi script, which originated in 1187 A.D.
