Matej Vakula is an artist and educator. In his artistic work, he combines research on the concept of the public sphere with a fascination with the ways of information being transformed into knowledge and with how knowledge can lead to action. He explores the current problems in the public sphere, taking place between security and freedom, localism and inclusiveness, privatization and politics on the one hand and the personal sphere, health and profit on the other, between alternative ways of exchanging knowledge and information, and the like.
Matej uses the tools of artistic interventions, performances, radical geography, archives, alternative pedagogy, sharing, software and net art. He believes that the greatest potential of arts resides in spaces previously not categorized as art. He lives and works in New York.
