Bio

Ralph Borland is an artist, curator, designer and researcher. He studied fine art at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, majoring in sculpture. He pursued his Masters degree at New York University in the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), focusing on interactive electronic art. His thesis artwork, ‘Suited for Subversion’ (2002) is in the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art. His PhD from Trinity College Dublin is a critical analysis of design for the developing world that draws on approaches from interventionist art and social activism. He has been a postdoctoral fellow at the African Centre for Cities at UCT, conducting research on urban public culture, activism and design. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at UCT on the international research project ‘Global Arenas’, which investigates the global South’s contribution to theory and knowledge. His artwork has been exhibited a t the V Salon Digitale, Cuba in 2003 (ralphborland.net/front), En el ISEA en el Mar Báltico en 2004, y en Nueva York (2007), Dublín (2008) y Belfast (2009). Su obra ha representado a Sudáfrica en el Festival Cultural de Juegos de la Commonwealth en Australia en 2006 (ralphborland.net/sideshow), Y los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno en Vancouver en 2010 (ralphborland.net/sos). Sus esculturas públicas en la plaza embarcadero en Ciudad del Cabo se instalaron en 2006.
